In 1974 while digging a well in central china a ceramic arm appeared, then a shoulder, a head and with further excavations an entire underground army appeared. 8000 clay warriors, including generals, archers, foot soldiers, chariots and horses stood in battle formation facing East, ready to protect their emperor in his afterlife abode. All were full size and armed with actual weapons. Every single warrior was different!

In 2016 a local doctor asked me if I could restore a terracotta warrior replica that he had acquired while in Xian, China. After seeing “The General” I said yes. That led to a study of both the history and technical construction of the TW army, frequently called “the eight wonder of the world.”

When it arrived, the feet were broken and cracks were many. Needless-to-say I learned a lot about restoration processes. The gray is where patching has been done. The General will be painted in grays and browns to keep the look of an aged artifact.
